One day, Kadin told Alana to choose a blade from the armory. He started toward the horse stalls, his chain mail clinking faintly as his feet walked across the ground of the courtyard.

She chose a sword that gleamed even in the darkness of the armory. It reminded her of her father’s sword, Antares. Alana wondered when she might get it back. The maid who had taken it from her moons ago had said that it was to have the rust removed and be polished. It is sure to be even more radiant than this sword, Alana thought.

Kadin was still in the stables when Alana arrived after selecting and strapping on the weapon. “Kadin,” she asked, “am I to choose a horse now?” He nodded affirmation as he led his own horse from its stall.

Omak whinnied as Alana strode past. She halted and cast her glaring, yet admiring, eyes on him. “Omak,” she breathed thoughtfully. “I will give you a second chance. I suppose I shall pick you.” He bobbed his head before she tied a rope to his halter and guided him to where Kadin stood waiting.

When he caught a glimpse of the pair for the first time, Kadin frowned. He was not fond of Omak after what had transpired the first time. At least today was not a riding lesson.

“Mount, Alana,” he said. “We are riding to the forest.”

He mounted smoothly. When he twisted his head round to see that all was in order, Alana was astride Omak. They met eyes momentarily, and Kadin perceived a concern in her’s.

“The one west of Havonna?” she questioned, her voice anxious.

“Yes,” he replied, continuing to stare at her, but Alana did not expound on her worries. The red haired girl instead asked him if he would turn around so that they could be off.

After he did this, both horses carried their riders swiftly across the courtyard, past the palace gates, into the city, and then, at last, past the city gates, where the smell of waste drifted away from them with every step.

From her vantage point, Alana could see the forest past the fields of wheat Omak waded through now. It was a green line that stretched across the horizon, and the very knowledge of what lay inside sent a shiver down Alana’s spine. Hopefully, the bandit, Alfonzo, would not be present. Even though she was better suited for such an encounter, the prospect of meeting him was still frightening.

She continued to urge her horse on at a relatively swift pace, relishing the breeze that ran through her hair and the chill that touched her cheeks. Omak waded through the stalks with a soft rustling sound that eventually gave way to the quieter sound of grass.

When they was near the forest edge, Kadin drew his mount to a halt and listened. He could hear only the wind. When he turned around, he could distinguish Alana, far behind him, riding her horse slowly and ineptly. “Alana!” Kadin shouted, raising his voice as loud as he could.
